Swim Lesson Levels: Auburn Parks and Recreation offers swim lessons for all ages. All lessons are taught by certified swim instructors.  Three levels of instruction are offered during the Early Bird Season (ages 6 mos. - 10 yrs).  Six levels are offered during the Summer Season (ALL ages).  In order to register for a level, the participant must provide proof of certification for the previous level OR be able to effectively complete all skills required of the previous level. Levels are listed below with recommended ages.  Ages are strictly for guidance.  Participants will be classified by skills, not necessarily age.

*Please note only Sea Babies, Sea Turtles, and Guppies lessons will be offered during the Early Bird Season.

Swim Lesson Levels:
Sea Babies (6 months - 3 years)
Parent/Guardian participation required.
This course is designed for parents interested in acquainting their young children to the water in a fun and controlled environment.  Participants will be oriented to the water through games, songs, and introductory skills.  Parents are directly responsible for their child’s instruction while under the guidance and supervision of a swim instructor.  One class will be dedicated to informing parents of the safe and efficient ways to help the kids continue to progress.  No prerequisite required.  To advance to the next level, the child must:  be age 4 or older AND able to participate without parent involvement.

Sea Turtles (4 - 6 years) - Beginner:
Swimmers will work on the following skills: Submerge head underwater, learn freestyle arms, kick with instructor assistance; float on stomach; float on back; learn to breathe; push off stairs to instructor; streamline body position (kick like a pencil); and kick to instructor from wall (depends on how advanced the class is.)

Guppies (7 - 10 years) - Advanced Beginner:
Swimmers must be at least 36 inches tall.
Swimmers will: review freestyle arms and kick to instructor from the stairs; start learning the basic freestyle stroke (swimming across lane or to instructor); review breathing; kick on back to instructor; start learning basic backstroke (arm movements and kicking); swim across stairwell without stopping; learn to breathe while continuing strokes; jumping into the pool unassisted and swimming to side, and learning to tread water.

Dolphins (11 - 15 years) - Intermediate:
Swimmers will learn to: streamline kicking off the wall on stomach and back; kicking on side freestyle and backstroke; diving in from side of pool (diving boards and starting blocks dependent on child's skill level); review backstroke and swimming across stairwell; working toward swimming freestyle all the way across the pool with little stopping; 6 kick switch freestyle and backstroke; and body position drill freestyle and backstroke.  Depending on class, participants could move on to more advanced drills.

Adult Swim Lessons (19 years and Older):
It is never too late to learn how to swim!  If you have always wanted to know how to swim, but have never had the time, now is your chance.  Lessons are available to fit the schedules of working adults.

Private Lessons:
If you are interested in one-on-one instruction for all levels of ability, please contact the Aquatics Program Specialist, Laura Parker, at 334-501-2957. The participant will be matched with a swim instructor. Children under 3 years may require parent participation in the pool. $15/half hour session.
