Gallons of Cooking Oil / Grease Collected and Recycled Since 02/2015 : 4728

The City of Auburn Water Resource Management Department (WRM) would like to bring public awareness to the harmful effects on the wastewater collection system as well as the environment resulting from improper disposal of grease and cooking oil. WRM has implemented a program in which cooking oil/grease may be collected for recycling. A Drop-Off Station has been placed at the City's Recycling Center located at 365 North Donahue Drive for customers to drop off containers of used cooking oil and grease and pick-up empty containers for future disposal. These substances can then be properly disposed of through recycling, sparing the environment and our wastewater collection system the harmful effects of these by-products.

Disposing of Used Cooking Oil

Used cooking oil should always be disposed of properly. DO NOT POUR THE COOKING OIL DOWN THE DRAIN. Even if the oil is poured slowly into the drain with hot water, this practice will eventually cause problems with your plumbing and the City's wastewater collection system as a whole. Once the oil has cooled, it can be poured into a free City of Auburn recycling jug (or other leak proof sealed container you may have) and dropped off at our recycling center. Used cooking oil is also biodegradable so it can be composted with other food scraps.

Important things you can do to ensure reliable operation of your wastewater system

DO NOT dispose of grease or oil of any kind down any drain in your home.

DO NOT introduce items other than sanitary waste into the wastewater system. Objects such as plastics, towels, wood, or metal can cause obstructions in your service line and in the sewer main.

DO NOT introduce chemicals into the wastewater system. Old or unused cleaning products, paint, pesticides or insecticides, etc. have a detrimental effect on the treatment process at the waste water treatment facility.

DO NOT introduce medications into the wastewater system. Old or unused medications can have a detrimental effect on the treatment process at the waste water treatment facility.
