Carl Mundy, Jr.

Carl Mundy was born in Atlanta, GA, but grew up in western North Carolina before moving to Alabama where he graduated from high school in Montgomery. He enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve at age 18 and attained the rank of Sergeant. Four years later, in June 1957, he graduated from the Alabama Polytechnic Institute in Auburn (Auburn University) and was commissioned Second Lieutenant. He served on active duty for the succeeding thirty-eight years, retiring in 1995 from the post of Commandant of the Marine Corps, and member of the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff.
During his active duty career, General Mundy commanded at all operational levels and served in combat in Vietnam. He served also on sea duty, and in a variety of staff, instructor, and independent duty assignments. For his service, he is the recipient of seventeen personal decorations and ten unit and general service awards.
Following retirement, General Mundy served for four years as President and Chief Executive Officer of worldwide operations of the United Service Organizations. He was also a Director of the General Dynamics and Schering-Plough Corporations; a member of the Advisory Council to the Comptroller General of the United States and to the National Navy League of the United States; a member of The Council on Foreign Relations; and Chairman of the Marine Corps University Foundation Board of Trustees.
General Mundy and his wife of forty-seven years, Linda, resided near Mount Vernon, Virginia and in Cashiers, North Carolina until his death on April 3, 2014. Two of their three children are Marine officers and Auburn University graduates-the eldest having commanded an infantry battalion during the attack on Baghdad, and now Marine Corps Liaison Officer to the US Senate, and his younger brother currently commanding an infantry battalion west of Baghdad. Their daughter is a consultant on instructional design and lives with her family in Saratoga Springs, New York. General and Mrs. Mundy have seven grandchildren.
