In May 1998, the Auburn City Council adopted Auburn 2020: Imagining a Better Community. Auburn 2020 is a long-range plan established with the purpose of guiding the future of the City and setting forth new goals, policies, and programs for encouraging and influencing positive change during future years. The Auburn 2020 document was created with the involvement of citizen volunteers, elected officials, and City staff. Auburn 2020 included the Auburn Bicycle Plan, which describes how we plan to make Auburn a more bike-friendly community. As a part of the Auburn 2020, the Auburn Bicycle Committee was formed to further this goal by coordinating with City Departments.

The Bicycle Plan defined goals to:

  • Establish a structure for coordinating implementation of the bicycle program goals, objectives, and policies.
  • Develop bikeways, trails, and other safe physical facilities for bicycle transportation.
  • Coordinate with local organizations and institutions to develop programs to inform the public regarding Alabama bicycle traffic laws, safe bicycle operation, and recommended engineering standards.
  • Establish an active enforcement program regarding Alabama traffic laws.
  • Encourage people to bicycle frequently as an alternative mode of transportation.

As a part of the Auburn 2020 Plan, the Auburn Bicycle Committee compiled the Bicycle Network Map to aid in determine where bicycle facilities would be prudent.  The map is updated annually based on new facilities and newly annexed properties. The facilities defined on the map are projects in progress. The facilities are constructed as funds become available. Many of the completed facilities are constructed using funding obtained through grants such as the Transportation Enhancement Grants. The Auburn Bicycle Committee assists the City in prioritizing the proposed facilities when funding is available.
