Special Olympics & Therapeutics

The Lee County, AL Special Olympics program is open to participants eight years of age and older who live or attend school in Lee County, AL.

Athletes are allowed to participate in any of the following events: Alpine Skiing, Aquatics, Athletics (Track and Field), Basketball, Bocce, Bowling, Cycling, Equestrian, Flag Football, Football (Soccer), Golf, Gymnastics (Artistic), Gymnastics (Rhythmic), Motor Activities, Powerlifting, Softball, Table Tennis, Team Handball, Tennis and Volleyball. Most athletes in the Lee County area participate in Athletics (Track and Field), Basketball, Bowling, Cycling, Flag Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Power Lifting, Softball, Swimming, or Volleyball. If you have an athlete or group that wants to try a new event, please let us know. We will help find a coach for that sport and local, regional or area games where that athlete/group of athletes can compete. Athletes are allowed to participate in as many sports/events as they would like on a local or regional level. However, an athlete can only compete in one sport at the State and National Games. Athletes are placed in divisions based on their age, gender, and qualifying score/time.

Medicals and participation waivers are required for all participants in the Special Olympics program. Medicals are current for 3 years, after which a new medical form must be completed. A physician's signature is required on the medical form. If you are unsure if your students need to update their medicals, please contact the Lee County Director to check against the Master List. If you know you already need medicals, please feel free to contact the Director with the amount you need and they will be mailed to you shortly. All medicals must be current on the day the student participates in an athletic event.

Many people think they do not have enough expertise to become a Special Olympics coach; however, all it takes is a willingness to learn a few, simple rules of the sport and then plenty of enthusiasm and encouragement for the athletes. Coaching is an extremely rewarding experience and something that just might change your life! If you don't think you have enough time to commit to becoming a coach, then please consider becoming a Volunteer. Any time you can give to these wonderful athletes is well spent and very much appreciated! Most coaching and orientation workshops are held each Fall - please check back for future workshop dates.
